“Some journeys are measured by what you sacrifice to get there”, is the rather apt tagline for the latest gangster flick, Jack Said, based on Paul Tanter’s successful graphic novel. Fledgling directors Lee Basannavar and Michael Tchoubouroff’s dark and gritty new film is such a non-descript journey of sorts that it has you questioning the sacrifice of roughly an hour-and-a-half’s worth of viewing time. Like a poor man’s version of the stylish Sin City, Jack Said does raise initial expectations with the opening black-and-white hostage scenes that give credit to the film-makers’ willingness to try interesting angles and design, respectfully in-keeping with the cartoon images in the novel. But transforming the visuals into grainy, washout colour soon after provides little impact or incentive, short of adding to the look and feel of low-budget (almost student) film trying to emulate the drama in its bigger budget brother. In fact, Jack Said may have fared better as a TV feature, and it certainly speaks volumes that the title is going straight to DVD on 5th October, so soon after its theatrical run.

Fun, fun, fun and more over-the-top fun! This yummy 3D animation is hilarious, heart-warming and hugely entertaining, and will satisfy kids (and their parents) no end. Is it silly? Hell, yes! Is it good? Hell, yes! It does exactly what it says on the tin…
Inspired by Ron and Judi Barrett’s beloved children’s book of the same name, Flint Lockwood is a young inventor who dreams of creating something that will improve everyone’s life, and when his latest and craziest invention of turning water into food succeeds, getting it to work fully means plugging it into the local power supply - which accidently sends the machine into the sky; thus making it rain meatballs. Flint becomes the local hero and puts the forgotten island on the map by making it an instant tourist hit. However, that is short-lived when the machine goes out of control and starts raining gigantic sized portions of food on the residents of Swallow falls. With everyone now against him, it becomes a race against time for him to fix it before they all get killed by giant cheeseburgers…

The idea of creating a cinematic piece of entertainment about the theory of evolution by Darwin sounds like a challenge for film-maker and distributor alike, as it may come a cropper at the box office - even if such a film is based on an intriguing work by Darwin descendent, Randal Keynes, called ‘Annie’s Box’. Inspiring a mainstream audience to part with money, when there are other, less taxing topics to be entertained by in this recession-conscience climate is no small feat.

I think it is safe to say many people - those who have seen the original - will be sceptical about remaking such a classic film, But it is also safe to say that Nick Love may just surprise a few people with his stylish, witty and warm take.
