Vangelis was born as Evangelos Papathanassiou in Valos, Greece on March 29, 1943. A self-taught piano player, Vangelis started his career in music with the sixties outfit Formynx. After reaching stardom in his native country, Vangelis moved to Paris where he formed the progressive rock band Aphrodite's Child, which disbanded in 1972. He started a solo career in 1974 with the album "Earth" and also wrote film scores for movies such as "La Fete Sauvage". Today Vangelis is best remembered for his soundtrack to the cult movie "Blade Runner".
