Simon & Garfunkel

As well known for their internal squabbling as their glorious guitar-driven harmonies, Simon & Garfunkel were a seminal act in the history of pop, producing a huge catalogue of hits that have stood the test of time - hard to believe that The Graduate was released in 1968.
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel grew up in Queens, NYC, and met during elementary school in 1953. Their first record Hey, Schoolgirl was put out under the name Tom & Jerry, but it wasn't until they renamed in the early 60s that they began to produce the folk-rock sound they're known for when The Sound of Silence hit No.1 two years later. When it did so, the pair were on another break and Simon was living in England, but quickly legged it back to the US to ride the momentum and the S&A juggernaut was born.
A collossal amount of hits followed, including Bridge Over Troubled Water, Cecilia and Hazy Shade Of Winter, and the duo won two Grammys in 1969 for best single Mrs Robinson and album The Graduate. However, the stress of success meant they split in 1970.
The pair have been drenched with awards and praise ever since, reforming intermittently but significantly in 1981 when their Concert In Central Park drew a crowd of 750,000. Still the soundtrack to many people's days, Simon & Garfunkel's appeal remains undimmed to this day.
