Known as "La Reina de la musica ranchera" (Queen of ranchera music), Mexican singer Lola Beltran enjoyed tremendous success until her death in 1996. Gifted with precise vocal control and powerful projection not unlike that of an opera singer, she touched the hearts of many, singing with rapturous virtuosity. Discovered while working at a radio station, Beltran achieved overnight success when she began recording in '54. Her regal facade was perfect for presenting the sad, emotional songs of the traditional ranchera and Mariachi styles. As a prolific recording artist she received a multitude of gold records and performed to huge, adoring audiences throughout Mexico as well as in Paris, New York City and even Moscow. She also produced and acted in Mexican popular films such as Cucurrucucu Paloma. With her musical legacy she remains a crucial icon of Mexican culture.
