Chubby Checker

Born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941 in Philadelphia, Chubby Checker was the man behind the rock & roll dance craze which swamped the US in the late 50’s and early 60’s. He became a superstar in 1959 with the release of a cover version of Hank Ballard & the Midnighters B-side, “The Twist”. The song remained at number one for 4 months, then returned to the same position a year later, breaking all sales records. Smash hits “Do the Pony” and “Let’s Twist Again” followed. Though he has made several comebacks during the 70’s and 80’s, he will always be remembered for his happy-charm rock & roll.
